Mr. Knowitall

January 16, 2016 by cpgronlund 3 Comments

"Mr. Knowitall" - Hands around a glowing Magic 8 Ball toyJerry Hachard was destined for big things, but left his family fortune behind for a quiet life of adventure and travel. When his parents are killed in an accident and he returns to his hometown, he’s amazed to find only one thing left to him in his parents’ will: a plastic Magic 8 Ball.

Jerry’s brother got the family business, and his sister got the family fortune. The Magic 8 Ball seems like a strange thing to leave to the first child in the family. It’s only when Jerry’s life begins changing in dramatic ways that he understands the gift…and all that comes with it.

Content Advisory: Loneliness, swearing, family rivalry, family fistfight, parental death, gambling, hospitalization.

[A $0.99 e-book version of Mr. Knowitall is available in the Store.]

What a story, Christopher. Every word held my interest and of course, in the end for me Jerry DID die; the old Jerry, leaving the real Jerry to pursue the things he always wanted to do.

I like that way of looking at it — that the old Jerry died 🙂

Initially, the physical death was the end of the story, but it just never seemed right as it sat around for a bit. So it was a matter of going back in and layering some future things and giving it a more uplifting ending. (Originally, it was a bit of an homage to Capote’s “Children on Their Birthdays.”

      I’m glad you enjoyed it!
